How to Measure Ring Size at home

Use our ring sizer

Accuracy: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5)

If you’re measuring ring size at home, an easy and accurate option is using a physical ring sizer. You can get a ring sizer from us before you buy, and you’ll receive $5 off your ring order. Simply try the sizer on your finger, choose the size that feels snug at the base but still slides over the knuckle with slight resistance.

Measure an existing ring

Accuracy: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5)

Measure the inside diameter (mm) of a ring that fits using digital calipers. Then match your measurement to the US size chart below.

No calipers? Take your ring to a jeweler and have them measure it on a ring mandrel.

Measure your finger

Accuracy: ⭐⭐☆☆☆ (2/5)

If you don’t have a ring sizer, you can use the string method to measure your finger at home. Wrap a non-stretch string around the base of your finger twice so it’s snug but not tight, then mark where the ends meet. Lay the string flat and measure the total length in millimeters (mm), then divide by 2 to get your finger’s circumference. Use the US size chart below to find your closest ring size.

Ring Size Chart

Use the chart below to convert your measurement into the correct ring size.

If you measured the inside diameter (mm) of a ring or your finger circumference (mm), match it to the closest value in the table to find your US ring size.

We also include international size conversions (Canada, UK, Germany, France, Australia, and Ireland) for reference.

What to do if you're between sizes

If your measurement falls between two ring sizes, comfortability should guide your choice.

In most cases:

  • Choose the next closest half size up for a more comfortable fit
  • Fingers naturally swell throughout the day, so sizing up helps avoid tightness

Consider sizing up if:

  • The ring feels tight at the base, or it’s very difficult to remove
  • You’re converting from an international size - it’s common for international sizes to land between US sizes (often around a US quarter size). In those cases, we recommend going up to the next closest US half size.

You may prefer the smaller size if:

  • The ring feels like it could slip off during normal wear
  • It feels overly loose at the base (a little looseness can be normal if you have larger knuckles, as long as the ring stays secure)

Couples Ring Sizing Tips (His & Hers)

Mens and womens rings use the same US size scale - there’s no separate “mens” or “womens” sizing. If you’re ordering a couples ring set, confirm both sizes before checkout. Many sizing issues come from simply mixing up which size belongs to which ring.

How a ring should fit

A properly fitting ring should feel secure and comfortable for everyday wear. It shouldn't feel like it's going to fall off or like it’s cutting off circulation.

A good fit means:

  • Snug at the base of your finger without feeling tight or painful
  • Slides over the knuckle with slight resistance (you may need a gentle twist)
  • Stays in place during normal hand movement.
  • Feels comfortable throughout the day, even as your fingers warm up
  • Doesn’t feel like it's going to fall off during everyday wear.

If you have larger knuckles, some looseness at the base of the finger is normal - as long as the ring stays secure and comfortable overall.

Keep in mind:

Finger size naturally changes due to temperature, time of day, activity, and hydration. Measuring at room temperature, ideally in the evening, gives the most accurate “everyday wear” fit.

If your ring meets these criteria, you’ve likely chosen the correct size.

Comfort Fit vs. Standard Fit

Comfort Fit

Comfort-fit rings have a gently rounded interior that reduces contact with the finger, so they often feel a little roomier than standard-fit rings in the same size. This is especially noticeable on wider bands (like 6mm and 8mm), where the rounded interior is easier to feel during everyday wear. If you were sized using a standard-fit ring, a comfort-fit ring may feel more forgiving in that same size.

Standard Fit

Standard-fit engagement rings have a flatter interior that sits with more surface contact against the finger, giving them a secure, traditional feel. This fit is common for women’s engagement rings. Because the interior is less rounded than comfort-fit styles, standard-fit rings can feel slightly more snug at the same size - particularly when sliding over the knuckle or during natural finger swelling throughout the day.
